MONTENEGRO TRAVEL GUIDE
Things to Know
Montenegro is a small country in southeastern Europe located on the Balkan Peninsula bordering the Adriatic coast. It is one of the youngest countries in the world having only declared its independence from Serbia in 2006. This new country is only 5,333 square miles in size which is just slightly bigger than the state of Connecticut. Montenegro has a little over 180 miles of coastline and every bit of it is mesmerizing. It is full of cascading cliffs running down to beautiful beaches and picturesque towns.
Currency:
The official currency of Montenegro is the Euro. The currency code for the Euro is EUR and the sign is €. You can find ATMs and banks easily throughout Montenegro in many of its popular towns. In addition to this, many restaurants, stores, and shops all accept credit and debit card payments making things even easier.
Language:
The official language in Montenegro is Montenegrin. Other popular languages spoken throughout the country are Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, and Albanian. English is also widely spoken in Montenegro. Especially in the more touristy destinations and coastal towns. It is still very likely that you will come across a language barrier when traveling through Montenegro so make sure to download the language on a translator app ahead of time or try to learn some common phrases to make things easier.

When To Visit
Montenegro is a beautiful country that has something to offer visitors all year round. From its picturesque coastal towns in the peak and shoulder seasons to its mountain resorts in the winter. I have broken down the different seasons below to give you a guide on what to expect during each one of these seasons.
The Peak Season: July-August
The Peak Season in Montenegro is July through August. During these months, the weather in Montenegro is at its warmest and driest. This can make inland traveling more difficult. If you are on the coast, the water is a great temperature this time of year making it perfect for swimming and relaxing at the beach. As the name implies, the peak season in Montenegro is also the busiest time to visit and accommodations will be at their highest cost. Book your accommodation well in advance to ensure it does not sell out and be prepared for some to impose a three-night minimum.
Shoulder Season: May-June and September-October
The shoulder season in Montenegro is my recommendation for when to visit. The shoulder season is generally May through June and September through October. The weather is still nice this time of year, and the water is still warm enough to swim with a fraction of the crowds. The weather is perfect for exploring Montenegro’s coastal towns or hiking in its mountain regions. The lower tourist levels during this time of year also mean more reasonable hotel and accommodation costs.
The Low Season: November to April
The low season in Montenegro is November to April and brings much cooler temperatures. The cooler temperatures bring snow to many of Montenegro’s inland towns. This is a popular time to partake in winter sports at some of Montenegro’s popular winter resorts like Kolašin and Žabljak. It can also be a nice time to visit many of the country’s coastal towns if you want to experience them in a quiet and peaceful setting. Be prepared for a lot of restaurants, shops, and hotels to be closed in the coastal towns, but you may be able to find some good deals at the ones that are still open.
