WHAT TO DO IN AUCKLAND

Exploring Waiheke Island New Zealand was easily my favorite thing we did while in Auckland. The Waiheke Island ferry ride is a quick making for the perfect day trip! The island is actually a lot larger than I expected however, the hop on hop off bus makes it easy to explore. The island is absolutely stunning and while we enjoyed wine tasting, there is so much more to do on the island!

Rangitoto Island New Zealand is such a unique experience. This is the island to visit if you’re looking for great hiking in New Zealand. The island appeared off the coast of Auckland from an unexpected volcano roughly 600 years ago; making the island both the youngest and largest volcano in Auckland. The Rangitoto ferry runs from Auckland daily. Rangitoto is an isolated island so there aren’t public toilets, markets, or shops on the island – go prepared! Rather, the island is filled with some of the best hikes in New Zealand and gorgeous scenery!

Devonport is an adorable bayside village a short ferry ride away from Auckland! The ferry leaves regularly from the port in Auckland and is only a 12 minute ferry ride. Devonport New Zealand is a charming little town filled with a number of cute coffee shops. Be sure to spend time wandering through the town! We stopped at Stone Oven Bakery, for breakfast and really enjoyed it. After exploring the town, make your way to the Waterfront for a nice walk along the water.

Mount Victoria is the highest volcanic cone on Auckland’s North Shore. The hike begins just past the town in Devonport. It is a little steep but is surprisingly a quick walk up to the top. It offers an amazing view of Auckland as well as the surrounding islands! It’s a pretty quick excursion if you have a little free time in Auckland.

Most people recommend heading to the Sky Tower in Auckland, however, I recommend checking out Mount Eden! There are a few ways to get to Mount Eden from Auckland. We took the bus which was easy however, it’s also accessible by train. The bus will drop you off just outside Mount Eden but it was easy to find from the bus stop. Mount Eden offers a great view of the city. It’s a pretty quick hike to the top making for a simple excursion!

Tip: If you head to Mount Eden be sure to swing by Cafe Mont – it is absolutely adorable!

Since Auckland is known as the city of sails, a sailing tour is a must! Personally, I love being on the water, so I always jump at the opportunity to be on a boat. My family and I took the America’s Cup Sailing tour and had a great experience. The tour is approximately two hours long. It’s great for a variety of people because you can either get involved, sit back and relax, or learn about sailing.

Make sure to take advantage of the Happy Hour deals in Auckland! When Max and I were exploring the city, we noticed a number of places offered great Happy Hour deals. We took advantage of a few deals and had a blast.

If you’re a coffee or latte drinker, try a flat white, you won’t be disappointed! Word is, New Zealand invented the flat white so they are basically everywhere. I am a latte drinker and absolutely love the flat white. I usually drink almond milk or oat milk in my lattes and most places offered almond milk.

I know eating on the Wharf tends to be more expensive because you are paying for the view but it is so worth it! If you don’t go for dinner at least go for an appetizer or a drink. It is so enjoyable to relax and enjoy the view. We got a few appetizers and a bottle of Champagne at Lula’s Inn which has a great view on the water!
