Things to Know

The Maldives is a cluster of 1,192 islands spread among 22 atolls. An atoll is a large circular coral reef that has a coral rim and a lagoon in the center. Although the Maldives may have 1,192 Islands, not all of these islands are inhabited. In fact, only about 200 of these islands are inhabited with another 80 islands serving as home to various resorts. Depending on where you are staying in the Maldives, you have two main options to get around. Most times your hotel will inform you of your options prior to booking. The primary methods to get around are either by speedboat or by seaplane. Most often, both options tend to be very pricy with the seaplane being the most expensive option. However, if you stay on a local island, you may be able to take a local ferry to your hotel. This will be the most cost-effective method, but also the slowest.

Currency:

The currency in the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa. However, we found almost everywhere to not only accept the US dollar but also prefer it! There are ATMs in the airport just after you exit customs if you need to take out any money after landing.

Language:

The official language in the Maldives is Dhivehi. English is also spoken pretty commonly all throughout this region as well.

When To Visit

The Maldives is home to some of the most luxurious resorts in the world. Each proving its guests with beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, and the infamous over-water bungalows. This beautiful country sits just north of the equator and has an average high of 84° to 89°F (29° to 31°C). The best months to visit the Maldives is November to April. This is when the weather is the driest and also the warmest. The months of June to October are the off-season in the Maldives due to the fact that they tend to receive a little more rain this time of year. However, even during this time of year, the weather is warm and there tends to still be plenty of sunshine throughout the day. I spent about two weeks in the Maldives during July and August and had beautiful weather most of the time. We only received rain two days and each of these days still had plenty of sunshine between rain showers. So, it all depends on luck when traveling to the Maldives this time of the year.

Seeing as how November to April is the best time to visit the Maldives, the prices tend to be much higher this time of year as well. You will have a much greater chance of having beautiful weather for your vacation. If you are looking to travel to the Maldives on more of a budget, then the off-season may be the ticket for you. Many resorts offer big discounts this time of year that can make traveling to this dreamy destination more affordable.
