While traveling the Fiji Islands, Max and I went on a few tours of the Mamanuca Islands. We cannot recommend Fiji tours of the surrounding islands more. The islands are stunning and all of the tours we went on were exceptional. Tours are one of the best things to do in Fji to maximize your time exploring the country!

We kicked off our first day in Fiji with the Whale’s Tale Tour through the Mamanuca Islands. We absolutely loved it – from the staff to the tour it was excellent! If you are looking for a fun and relaxing tour in Fiji, this is the one to go on!

BOOKING

We booked our trip through Viator and their tour operator was Rosie Holiday. The tour was extremely easy to book and has an easy cancellation policy. As long as you cancel within seven days of your excursion, there is no cancellation fee. When we took the tour in January of 2018, it was $120 USD for the excursion. This price includes pickup and drop off from a selection of hotels in the area.

We were scheduled to land in Fiji the same morning as our Fiji tour. When I contacted Rosie Holiday to let them know our situation, they were more than willing to provide transportation from the airport! We were greeted at the airport by Rosie Holiday for our tour with Whale’s Tale which was so helpful. They also put our luggage in storage for the day at their office in the airport. This makes doing a tour on a layover so ideal (otherwise you have to pay to store your bags!).

DEPARTURE

The tour leaves from Port Denarau which is the main port in Nadi Fiji. The tour begins at 10 am however, we arrived around 9:30 and were able to board. Upon arrival, the crew will have an amazing breakfast set up which includes fruit, pastries, and drinks (complimentary champagne included!).

SETTING SAIL

Once everyone arrived, we were ready to set sail for the Mamanuca Islands Fiji! There were about 15 people on our tour but we were told they normally have a larger group. We sailed for about an hour and a half (rough estimate here – we were drinking champagne and enjoying good views) before arriving to an uninhabited island. The crew was awesome – they were so low key and more than happy to refill drinks!

ISLAND TIME

We grabbed our things and hopped on a small boat that took us onto the island. Side note – we were worried about what to do with the backpack we brought on board which ended up not being an issue at all! We brought it on the island with us and left it at the main hut while the crew prepared lunch.

From there, we were able to pretty much do whatever we wanted until lunch was ready! We could relax, swim, go for a walk, play volleyball, snorkel, or kayak around the island! There are also massages available for purchase however, it was quite toasty so we opted not to get massages! The crew made an incredible Fijian lunch [see below :)]. It was delish! We enjoyed sitting around listening to the crew play the guitar and sing songs while we ate. After lunch, we had more time to explore the island, snorkel, and kayak. We had an absolute blast on the island and snorkeling above the coral reef.

RETURN

On the way back to Port Denarau, the crew sat with us playing the guitar and signing songs. The entire group came together to sing songs and enjoy the afternoon! We enjoyed getting to know everyone while loving the views of the islands in Fiji. The excursion is approximately 7 hours so you will arrive back to Port Denarau around 5 pm. From there, you will be provided transportation back to your hotel.

We were flying to New Zealand at 10:00 pm so we had a few hours to explore before heading to the airport. The tour company not only provided us with a taxi but also recommended a restaurant for us to check out it Nadi. They also set up a taxi to pick us up from the restaurant once we were done with dinner which was unbelievably nice!

WHAT TO BRING

The number one thing to bring with you on the Whale’s Tale tour is your camera. There will be some epic shots throughout the tour! Make sure to bring your bathing suit, a towel and plenty of sunscreen. We reapplied are sunscreen pretty consistently and still ended up getting burnt so sunscreen is key! A tip is not included in the tour package so if you would like to tip the crew be sure to have cash on hand!

Max and I found the Whale’s tale tour to be so relaxing and enjoyable. We enjoyed sailing, hanging on the island, and drinking champagne! The crew was awesome and made the trip that much more fun!
