FIJI TRAVEL GUIDE

Private Island in the Mamanuca Islands, Whales Tale

Things to Know

Fiji, officially the Republic of Fiji, is an archipelago and country located in the South Pacific Ocean. It consists of over 330 islands that stretch for over 7,056 square miles. Of those 330 islands, only the largest 110 islands are inhabited. The largest of the Fijian islands is Viti Levu and is home to the nation’s capital, Suva, and much of the country’s population. Fiji is known for its friendly people, beautiful beaches, and tropical waters.

Currency:

The official currency of Fiji is the Fijian dollar. The currency code for the Fijian dollar is FJD and the sign is FJ$. There is an exchange office at Nadi International Airport as well as ATMs. I recommend taking out cash as credit and debit cards are not always accepted everywhere. If you are in the larger cities in Fiji or at the resorts, you can generally use your cards. However, it is good to have cash in case they do not accept credit cards as there is a strong chance you will encounter this situation. There are also some ATMs/Banks in Suva and in a few other major cities.

Language:

The three official languages in Fiji are Fijian, Fiji Hindi, and English. Fijian is the native language spoken by the indigenous inhabitants. English was brought over by the British when they first settled in Fiji. It is widely spoken throughout the country making communicating with the locals a breeze.

When To Visit

Fiji is a tropical paradise known for its beautiful islands and vibrant water. Like many tropical destinations, Fiji only has two seasons as they are a tropical climate. The two seasons that Fiji experiences are the wet season and the dry season. Their names are self-explanatory, but I will break them down a little more below to give you more insights on what to expect when visiting during each season.

The Dry Season: May to October

The dry season in Fiji is during the months of May through October. During the dry season, the weather is cooler than the wet season bringing less tropical storms to the country. The average temperature during the day during the dry season in Fiji is around 77° F as opposed to an average of around 87° F in the wet season. It is smart to book your plans and accommodations well in advance they often book up well in advance.

The Wet Season: November to April

The wet season in Fiji is the summer months of November to April. During these months, the weather heats up causing for hotter and more humid days. This weather is very welcoming to thunderstorms that can cause torrential downpours. However, that does not mean if you visit this this time of year it will rain your entire vacation. Often the rain comes in torrential downpours and then the weather clears up quickly after. The weather this time of year can cancel boat plans and tours on occasion so keep that in mind when planning your trip.
